LG Magic Remote Programming Instructions

Please Note: These are general instructions. The LG Magic Remote can be one of the more difficult remotes to program, and LG changes its menus from year to year, so the steps and menu names on your TV may look a little different.

Before You Start

If your ZVOX has an HDMI ARC input and it’s plugged into the ARC or eARC jack on your TV, you most likely don’t need these instructions. With SIMPLINK (LG’s name for HDMI-CEC) turned on, the Magic Remote should control the ZVOX automatically.

These instructions are for ZVOX speakers connected to the TV with an optical cable. Most remotes use infrared (IR), but the Magic Remote uses radio frequency (RF) to talk to the TV. Since the ZVOX responds to IR commands, the TV has to be told which device you want to control before the Magic Remote will send IR volume commands to your ZVOX. What we are doing is setting the ZVOX to PS-1 so it will respond to Sony remote commands, then telling the TV you have a Sony soundbar so the Magic Remote sends Sony volume commands.

Part 1: Set Your ZVOX to PS-1 (Sony)

Note: Not every ZVOX model has this setting, but most do.

For Models with an Other Settings Button on the ZVOX Remote

AV200 (ver 2), AV201, AV155, AV157, AV203, AV257, AV355, AV357, AV835, AV855, SB380 (ver 2), SB500 (ver 2), SB700 (ver 2)

1. Turn on your ZVOX speaker.
2. Press and hold the Other Settings button on the ZVOX remote until you see “PS-0” (or another PS number) flashing on the ZVOX display.
3. Use the Volume Up button on the ZVOX remote to go to “PS-1”.
4. Wait for the display to stop flashing.

For Original AccuVoice TV Speakers and Soundbars

AV200 (ver 1), AV205, SB380 (ver 1), SB400, SB500 (ver 1), SB700 (ver 1)

1. Turn on your ZVOX speaker.
2. Press and hold the Power and Volume Up (+) buttons on the right end of the speaker at the same time until you see “PS-0” (or another PS number) flashing on the ZVOX display.
3. Use the Volume Up (+) button on the speaker (not the remote) to go to “PS-1”.
4. Wait for the display to stop flashing.

For Soundbase Models

1. Turn on your ZVOX speaker.
2. Press and hold the Power/Mute and Volume Up (+) buttons on the front bottom edge of the speaker at the same time until you see “PS-0” (or another PS number) flashing on the ZVOX display.
3. Use the Volume Up (+) button on the speaker (not the remote) to go to “PS-1”.
4. Wait for the display to stop flashing.

Part 2: Find the Universal Control Settings on Your LG TV

The location of this setting depends on the version of webOS your TV has. If you’re not sure which version you have, try these in order starting with the newest. Press the Settings button on the Magic Remote, select All Settings, then:

• webOS 23 and newer (2023 and newer TVs): General > External Devices > Universal Control Settings
• webOS 6.0 and webOS 22 (2021 and 2022 TVs): General > Devices > External Devices > Universal Control Settings
• webOS 5.0 (2020 TVs): Connection > Device Connection Settings > Universal Control Settings
• webOS 4.5 (2019 TVs): Connection > Device Connector > Universal Control Settings
• Older TVs: Press the Home button on the Magic Remote and select Device Connector from the app list

Part 3: Set Up the ZVOX as a Sony Soundbar

1. Make sure the ZVOX is turned on and connected to the TV’s optical output.
2. Open Universal Control Settings (or Device Connector) using the path for your TV above. On newer TVs you may need to select Manage Settings.
3. Select Soundbar (this may be listed as Soundbar and Bluetooth Devices), then select Optical as the connection.
4. When the TV asks for the manufacturer, check the list for ZVOX first. Some LG TVs list ZVOX as a manufacturer, and if yours does, you can pick ZVOX instead of Sony. If ZVOX isn’t listed, choose Sony. If Sony isn’t listed either, use the search option and type it in.
5. If you picked Sony and the TV asks you to pick a remote type or model, try “Sony Remote Option 8” or “Sony Candidate Model 18” first. These have worked well with our speakers in the past.
6. Follow the on-screen instructions to finish the setup, then test the volume up, volume down, and mute buttons on the Magic Remote.

Important: At one point during setup, the TV will ask you to test the power button. Don’t press the power button on the remote. The TV wants you to select the power button icon on the screen, then press the OK/Select button on the Magic Remote. If the ZVOX turns off or on when you do this, tell the TV it worked. This will make more sense when you see the step on your TV.

Note: On some LG TVs, the setup won’t let you pick optical right away and you need to tell it the soundbar is connected to an HDMI jack or AV In. After you finish the programming, go back and change the connection method from HDMI/AV In to Optical. A PDF is attached that shows the steps needed on these TVs.
